HMS Crescent

HMS Crescent against the French Réunion, 1793, by John Michael Groves

HMS Crescent, 36-guns, in action with the french frigate Réunion. Crescent lost her fore topmast early in the action, but shot away the Frenchman’s fore yard and mizzen topmast. After two hours of close quarters fighting Réunion struck her colours with heavy casualties; astonishingly, Crescent had only one man injured. Her Captain, James Saumarez, was knighted after their return to Portsmouth.
